Getting around your Cleveland area backyard day, or night.

Cleveland patio and pergola lightingYour outdoor living space is a refuge. It’s a place to leave the worries of the day (or the week) behind and enjoy some solitude or the company of family and friends. That’s why we shy away from calling the fixtures that we use to illuminate specific areas as “task lighting.” That name implies that there is somehow a “to-do list”. We want our outdoor spaces to be worry free. No worries about things to do and no worries about being able to move around and use these spaces safely and effectively at night.

When we design one of our custom Cleveland outdoor lighting designs, each and every light has its own function: even if that function is to provide warmth or ambiance.

Do you have an outdoor kitchen or grill area where you like to prepare meals during the spring, summer or fall? That activity area should be one of the first places to install lights. In fact, professionally-designed-and-installed outdoor lighting will create the ability to provide different amounts of illumination to specific areas. For instance, you may need more direct focal lighting for your grilling area, but a more subtle, soothing amount of illumination for outdoor dining.

Stair-mounted lights, under railing lights and pathway lighting are all critical to include when you are designing for safety. After you install a system of lights to show you your way around the yard at night, you will wonder how you ever lived without them.

Our lighting design professionals know how to capture the beauty of your pergola, gazebo or landscaping after dark. Tell us how you like to live outside and we will develop a plan for a complementary lighting style.

Cleveland. Pastimes. Family. Playing Ball. Under the Lights.

A long 68 years has gone by since our Cleveland Indians won the World Series. While winning in 2016 would have made for unbelievable memories, Cleveland residents and natives enjoyed every moment of the 2016 run. Big sports are as much a part of Cleveland as is the magic that is called up when we hear the words “Play Ball”. Walk past an empty ballfield on a clear evening

and you’re likely to see a father gently tossing balls to a future slugger. Passing the torch, or the baseball bat, to the next generation is as all-American as it gets. Baseball is about the feel of a glove that has been oiled to perfection. It’s about hot dogs that really aren’t that hot and beer that’s not really that cold but are the best-tasting beer and hot dogs you’ll ever have. It’s about the anticipation of arriving at a beloved evening game under the outdoor lights. It’s about moments and memories. Without kicking up some dirt, very few things can bring that feeling to life except watching some of the great baseball movies of all time; 1942’s Pride of the Yankees with Gary Cooper, 1984’s The Natural with Robert Redford, and 1989’s Field of Dreams and Kevin Costner.

Until the next chance we have to participate in a huge national tournament, we are going to have Friday nights in the backyard where all the neighborhood kids clamor to your yard because you have a big yard and just the right amount of outdoor lighting to pitches to the kids for a couple hours. There are going to be dozens of Saturday nights when we hook up the nighttime game outside and enjoy celebrating 9 great innings with some beer that is perfectly chilled in the outdoor kitchen. If we’re lucky, the outdoor refrigerator is stocked with some well-chosen craft beers for everyone to try.

Make those great memories in your own backyard. Illuminate your grassy yard for nighttime play. Illuminate your outdoor kitchen for lively discussions about the weekly roundup. Add outdoor lighting to your patio and outdoor fire pit to discuss your fantasy picks before you throw a few dollars into the pot. If you have a community gathering place, add outdoor lighting to your community center’s grassy area or to your church’s playground area.

Top 4 checklist for picking a Cleveland-area outdoor lighting company

Wouldn’t it be nice if selecting a home contractor was as easy as 1, 2, 3… 4, 5? The fact of the matter is that selecting a contractor is anything but a cut and dried equation. Doing a strong contractor evaluation is time intensive and there is no established formula for making your selection. We’ve put together a checklist for you that should help in your process.

  1. How long have they been in business?
  2. How long are they going to be in business?
  3. How are their online reviews?
  4. Do you like them?

How long have they been in business?

The answer to this one can help you to quickly eliminate some of the contractors in contention. While there is no perfect number of years to indicate whether you should consider a contractor, there are a couple ways to look at this. Perhaps a good delineation would be 0-3 years, 4-10 years and 11+ years. In looking at contractors with 0-3 years of experience, they will likely have a great deal of enthusiasm. But, they are still getting their feet wet and learning some newcomer mistakes. You don’t want to be the training ground. Contractors with 4-10 years’ experience have made the newcomer mistakes and are well past getting their feet wet. Do your due diligence on review sites first but this is a significant amount of experience. You are, however, looking at a different level of experience when you get into the double digits. Based on our US economy over the last 2 decades, you are now looking at a contractor who has survived an economic recession and is still prospering. Proven to have weathered so many different types of storms, you can feel confident on this front. We have been proudly serving the Cleveland market since 1997.

How long are they going to be in business?

Reading this title, you may think we have a magic ball. The real question is whether they are going to be around when you need maintenance, bulbs and upgrades. We hear so many stories about contractors that seem to disappear and cannot be found as soon as something goes wrong. A good rule of thumb is if they’ve been around a long time, they will still be around and will be easy to find when you need maintenance and upgrades.

How are their online reviews?

Arguably, the most important research is to find out what actual customers think. We all know that both happy and unhappy customers leave online reviews to help future customers of that business. Can we imagine making a purchase from an online store without looking at the star rating and ensuring that their customers are willing to publicly attest to and provide information about the experience? Please take a look at our A+ rating on the BBB, our 5-star rating on Houzz, and our 4.8 star rating on an independent review site including more than 180 reviews about Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Cleveland.

Do you like them?

This may be the most important test – the gut check test. Do you feel confident about their expertise? Do you want to have them in your yard? Do you like them? Regardless of reviews or any other information, don’t discount your own gut check.

Thinking about lighting your landscaping for your Cleveland-area home?

Path-Lighting

Hands down, landscaping lighting is a great investment. The tough question is where to begin. Do you begin in the front yard or the backyard? Do you begin illuminating the landscaping close to your home’s facade or do you light remote areas near the periphery of your yard? Here are some things to think about.

Vantage points

Outdoor lighting has both functional and aesthetic benefits and it’s important to look at both when developing the outdoor lighting design for your home. Let’s think first about the vantage points from which you hope to enjoy your lighting. Do you want to see your landscaping while looking outward from an interior room? Do you want to see your tree line? Would you like to enjoy the view of a couple prized flower beds? Do you want to see the ivy vine that now meanders through your trellis or around the posts of your pergola? If your master bedroom that faces the street, do you want to be able to clearly see the driveway to keep an eye out for family members arriving home at night?

tree-waterfall-lights

Now think about your exterior vantage points. These can include the view from the street, the view from the head of the driveway, from the deck out to the rear yard and even the view from your pool back toward your home’s exterior. If you entertain quite a bit, you might want your home to be easily seen and found. If you have a detached structure such as a pool house or fire pit, you may want to clearly see the path between there and your home.

Nighttime use

The next consideration when working with a professional on an outdoor lighting plan is how you use your yard and grounds at night. Do you use an outdoor living area such as a porch or deck? Do you have a seating area in a more remote part of your yard that you’d like to use for evening relaxing or entertaining? Do you have a great fire pit area and want to make sure you have safe footing between there and your back door? Don’t forget activities that you would love to enjoy at night if you had outdoor lighting.

Safety/security

Outdoor lighting can provide both safety and security. Lighting around the corners of your home and around the entrance areas enhances your home’s security. It’s a known fact that would-be intruders will stay away from areas where they’re more likely to be spotted. Also think about where your car travels, where guests travel, the walkways people use and the additional entrances that family members and guests use. Your most frequently used door at night might be the door to your garage. If so, it’s important to make sure the path to that door is well illuminated. Don’t forget to protect against tripping hazards. Your low lying flowers might do a great job of lining the driveway so you want to make sure they are not trampled at night due to poor landscaping lighting.

The best outdoor lighting in Cleveland doesn’t require a weekend job to pay the utility bill

lr House lighting and pathway lighting Cleveland OHOutdoor lighting is a great way to increase your home’s curb appeal, safety, security and outdoor living space functionality. You know you want to illuminate your home and landscaping but you are concerned about increasing your electric bill. While adding any kind of lighting to your home will usually add a nominal cost to your electric bill, you might be surprised to find out that having Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Northern Ohio add an outdoor lighting system in place of your current porch light, driveway light and back yard spot light will likely not increase your electric bill at all.

Right now you probably leave on a front porch light and a driveway light for security at night. If you’re like most Cleveland home owners you turn these lights on at night and leave them on for days or months without ever shutting them off or thinking of them again. Then when you go out of town for vacation or work, you leave a few lights on in the house to make your home look occupied – a recommended trick – but possible hefty electric bill is the result.

With Outdoor Lighting Perspectives exclusive Lighting Control Automation (LCA), leaving lights on days at a time for security is a thing of the past. With the LCA system your lights are only on stone facade lighting Cleveland lrwhen they need to be. You’ll gain complete control over your outdoor lights. From the outside it actually looks exactly the same as it would if you were home.

When it comes to your outdoor lighting system, LCA is more than just a timer. You can use it to create different “zones” that can be set to turn on or off at different times. With the days always getting longer or always getting shorter, sunset is an ever changing factor. Our smart system will turn your lights on later or earlier so that they are only on when you need them – when the sun goes down.

As a further cost saving measure Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Northern Ohio recommends LED fixtures for your retrofit, repair or installation. A four Watt LED can produce as much light as a 20 Watt halogen with as much as an 80% savings in electricity cost. Add to that the prolonged life of the LED bulb which lasts more than 10x longer than most halogens. With the savings you’ll get from using LED with our LCA, your dream of an outdoor lighting system for your home is an attainable reality – a home improvement investment that truly could lower your electric bill.

Add texture with shade

Cleveland outdoor lighting is all about subtlety. Illuminating all of your favorite features on the exterior of your home and property might feel like the best approach, but at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Northern Ohio we find that using restraint when lighting focal points results in the best effects. When your home has cedar shake siding, it takes just the right shadow between and under the shakes to show off the beautiful siding at night. By aiming the light up and under the shakes we use shade to show-off texture that you just can’t see with a spotlight. With our strategic outdoor lighting design the texture of a cedar shake house is often more detailed at night than in the brightness of a sunny day.

Add depth with shadow

Homes with multiple reliefs in their architecture rely heavily on shadows to highlight the dimension. By spacing our lights and adjusting the width of the wash, we accentuate the depth of the cut outs and the beauty of the prominences. In the light of the day, the sun creates shadows, as should your outdoor lighting. A too bright spot light that shines the same on the entire front of the home would create a two-dimensional effect, losing the grandeur of the home’s architectural character.

tree-lighting-Cleveland-Ohio

This residential backyard oasis comes to life with their integrated outdoor lighting

Natural Color

If you’ve ever seen a picture that was taken with a flash that is too bright you know the color results are unnatural and unsightly. Human skin tones and light colors will turn bright white, lovely deep tones will look almost pastel and rich primary colors will appear muted. The same idea applies to outdoor lighting. Whether it’s your garden, favorite tree or your home’s exterior, a too bright light, too direct light, or too many lights will wash out the colors making them look unnatural and overwhelming. By using just the right brightness, shining at just the right angle and creating shadow between and behind the highlighted items, we allow your eye to render the natural color of your landscape and home.

Romance

While all of the practical effects of shadowing in outdoor lighting are important and lovely, nothing beats the romantic ambiance created by the use of shadowing. When we are lighting a pool, spa, patio or gazebo, we make sure that a romantic atmosphere can be achieved with the use of just the right amount of light, but more importantly, just the right amount of shadow.

With the use of shadows, we can create a lovely natural three-dimensional effect for your home and outdoor living areas. Embrace the shadow with Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Northern Ohio.

Christmas lights won’t work when what you really need is bistro lighting for your Cleveland area restaurant

Cleveland restaurant patio lights outside LEDIf you’ve ever eaten pizza at Angelo’s in Lakewood OH, you surely remember it. If you haven’t had pizza there, then put it on your to do list and you won’t be disappointed. Not only is Angelo’s voted the #1 pizza in the Cleveland market, it’s now also one of the top pizzerias in the United States.

Christmas lighting and pizza don’t go together

At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Northern OH, we love LED Christmas lights. Our C9 string lights are not only festive for the holidays but many of our commercial clients leave their C9 string style lights up throughout the year. They have a quintessential charm that welcomes guests and creates a nostalgic ambiance. In many cases, professionally installed LED holiday light strings may do the trick. At Angelo’s, hanging strings of actual Christmas lights just wasn’t doing the trick.

Cleveland commercial restaurant outdoor lightingThe lights you see on the parapet walls in the picture above are bistro lights. These are the lights that you often see professionally strung across courtyards and patios. Our bistro lights are all ultra warm LED lights.

In addition to lining the upper exterior facade, we also used the lighting under the awnings on the front and side of this Madison Avenue corner restaurant. Lighting these areas not only makes Angelo’s corner lot a focal point on the busy street but also creates charm and ambiance for restaurant guests that are dining outside.

Bistro lighting Northern OH restaurant ClevelandThe finishing touch on this lighting was re-lamping the Angelo’s sign. Achieving all the outdoor lighting sign, Angelo’s can now be picked out of the crowd from far down Madison Avenue. Patio diners have enough light to see their mozzarella ooze off their first super warm piece of pizza. And, true to how any downtown establishment should be, the lighting compliments the architectural features of this historic style building.

Home facade and landscape lighting in Moreland Hills Chagrin Valley OH

Take a look at this beautiful home in the Moreland Hills are of the Chagrin Valley. When these homeowners gave us a call, they were looking for lighting for their home, for their grounds and also for their stunning backyard water feature. That is exactly what we designed and installed. Take a look.

As outdoor lighting designers, we know the importance of looking at the whole picture. With outdoor lighting design, the goal is not to illuminate everything but rather to illuminate strategically to meet the desired objectives. When entering a property, elegant but effective driveway lighting is critical. You want to make sure that family and guests safely navigate everything from the entrance to your property to the entrance to your front door. You want to make sure that no wayward tires find your driveway landscaping. Notice how this lighting gently illuminates both the drive and the landscaping that adorns the driveway. The entrance pillar is also illuminated to mark the property entrance and to enhance the aesthetics of the long meandering drive.

stucco house lighting Moreland Hills OH

After safely traversing the driveway, you arrive at this lovely home. The home has a stucco facade with stone details. Several architectural reliefs add visual interest and depth to this majestic facade. Our illumination is very understated ensuring that the focus is on the home and not on the lighting itself. Notice the way the stone details can be seen from this distant vantage point.

Chagrin Valley OH LED outdoor lighting

A closer look from the circular drive reveals the lighting on more of the home’s facade. The uplighting from behind the front shrubbery illuminates the texture change from the stone to stucco. The entire height of the facade can be seen through deft selection and placement of the architectural lighting.

LED stucco home facade lighting Chagrin Valley OH

Around the back of the home is this magnificent water feature.  The water meanders down several terraced levels with stack stone details on the outer retaining walls. A variety of different landscaping adorns the water feature. Selectively, we identified a few focal landscaping elements to illuminate ensuring to enhance the lighting of the entire water feature while not distracting attention from the cascading water itself. The beautiful landscaping was done by top local landscaper Terrie Ries.

Moreland Hills OH water feature lighting

As the sun sets behind this water feature, you can see somehow gentle, yet how effective the water feature illumination is. With strong lighting, your eye is always drawn to what is illuminated and not to the lights themselves. As this water takes its long path into the lower pool, you can see the different stones and hints of various levels where it cascades to the next level.

Chagrin Valley OH water feature lighting

Commercial-grade path lights are used along this home’s paths. This home is quite contemporary and the contemporary style lights play nicely off the cable rail detail. Also notice how the fan pattern in the concrete path can be seen at night. Not only is the path safe for traversing but the subtle texture details can be appreciated at night.

Honestly, how often do you take the environment into consideration when purchasing?

environmentally conscious purchase decisions think greenWe are all guilty of this. Few of us take the environment into consideration when making purchase decisions. Sure, we may purchase a LED bulb a time or two or we may even purchase a low flow toilet next time we replace a toilet. But if we’re being honest, that is likely the extent of our environmental consideration. We leave those decisions to the “greenies”. We know that there is a passionate and caring subset of the population that is willing to not only invest in greener technology but also to take a bit of a financial hit to conserve. We respect that subset of the population and quite honestly, we let them do all of the work for us.

At what point will we all, the buying public, become greenies or at least greener? At what point can we all not afford to throw water away and to throw energy away? At what point will the greater portion of the buying public investigate environmental impact when doing our diligence on a home improvement investment?

Have your cake and eat it to. Lead with responsibility and save money for doing it.

Here at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Northern Ohio, we’ve been selling nothing but LED outdoor lighting for the past few years. We were doing it even when it wasn’t cool and even when there was a price difference in the technology. Why? Here’s why. We know it’s difficult to put a pencil and paper to long term energy savings. After all, the electricity used for your outdoor lighting is only a portion of your electric bill so it’s difficult to decipher the exact dollars saved there. The second reason it’s difficult to put a pencil and paper to money saved on our electric bills is because the bulbs last seemingly forever. Our customers that purchased LED outdoor lighting systems from us 3 or 4 years ago are still using the same bulbs and will likely not replace the bulbs in the next 4-8 years so there is an awful lot of future savings that are difficult to compute in dollars and cents. Those same customers that purchased LED systems from us 3 and 4 years ago have been back to have us illuminate their backyards and outdoor living areas, pools and decks — and like the Energizer Bunny, the bulbs in their original LED systems are still working.

This year, we brought another environmentally effective and efficient service into our business. Called Conserva Irrigation, we mend, replace or install money-saving irrigation systems that deliver only the amount of water needed to get the job done and no more. When you added an LED outdoor lighting system to your home, you likely didn’t notice any change in your power bill and likely that cost savings went unnoticed. With your irrigation system, you know it adds a lot to your water bill. Likely the only thing you dread about the summer months is the significantly higher water bill. When we migrate your existing system to a water conserving system, you will see a 20% – 40% reduction in your water bill. This decision is a lot easier because you can’t afford not to upgrade your system. How much is that going to cost? It’s free for us to do a full 12-point inspection on your Cleveland irrigation system and provide you with an estimate to upgrade some leaky heads or make other money saving improvements.

At Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Cleveland and Conserva Irrigation Cleveland, you can’t afford not to investigate a change. You can’t afford to not lead with responsibility – because with us – that decision will save you money.
